Tips on How to Clean Leather Car Seats

Learning how to clean leather car seats properly is likely easier than you imagine. Simply follow these steps to care for your car’s leather:

  1. To get started, vacuum the crevices of your seats to remove the major dust, dirt, and debris.
  2. Next, apply a pH-neutral cleaning solution to your upholstery. Be sure to avoid getting the solution in any perforations if your seats have them.
  3. With a microfiber cloth or a soft-bristled brush, scrub the leather upholstery.
  4. Once your seats are clean, apply a leather conditioner to your seats. Gently rub the conditioner into your seats and let it dry. Next, buff in the conditioner with a fresh microfiber cloth. This extra step keeps your seats supple and prevents cracking.

What Cleaning Products Should Be Used?

One thing we get asked a lot at our Elgin service center is, “What cleaning products should I use inside my car?” A colorless, simple damp rag is your best bet when cleaning your upholstery. Warm, soapy water or specially-made leather cleaners are also acceptable to use on your car’s interior. No matter what you select to get the job done, be sure to avoid the following:

  • Sharp objects that may scratch
  • Household cleaner
  • Dark cloths
  • Detergents
  • Furniture polish

Additional Leather Care Tips

  1. Travel with a small bottle of leather cleaning solution and some fresh microfiber cloths. Having these materials on hand will enable you to handle minor spills as they happen!
  2. If you can, park your vehicle in a garage as often as possible. Extreme temperature shifts can damage your leather.
  3. When out and about, look for parking in the shade. Direct sunlight can cause sun bleaching and other unnecessary damage to the interior of your vehicle.
