How to Be Fuel-Efficient While Driving

2021 Chevy Traverse EXT driving on a dirt road

It’s easy to drive with reckless abandon. It takes more effort to cultivate fuel-efficient driving habits. Luckily, with some practice, the right car, and the right knowledge, learning to be fuel-efficient while driving doesn’t have to be all that difficult. So, how can you save fuel when driving on hills or during your daily commute down flat Schaumburg freeways? Biggers Chevrolet is here to offer answers!

5 Tips for Being a Fuel-Sipping Motorist in Streamwood

Looking to save some gas money on your Streamwood and Bartlett road trips and commutes? Here are five actionable steps to incorporate into your daily driving routine to drive more efficiently:

  1. Plan Ahead for Traffic: If you can, try to avoid rush hour by carefully planning your daily drives. Sitting and stop-and-go traffic is not only an inefficient use of your fuel, but it can also put mechanical stress on your car’s drivetrain.
  2. Accelerate Gently: Avoid “flooring it”. The harder you press the gas, the more fuel you use. Try to aim for bringing your vehicle up to 10 mph from a standstill in about five seconds if possible.
  3. Avoid High Speeds: When driving on Hampshire highways, try to keep your speed between 55 and 65 mph (essentially, make sure you’re following the speed limit). This will help you save on gas.
  4. Coast to a Stop: Coasting means taking your foot off the gas pedal and letting your car slowly come to a stop. Obviously, eventually, you’ll need to apply your brakes, but the idea with coasting is to use the brakes to stop your car while letting it exhaust forward momentum by slowing down on its own.
  5. Use AC at Highway Speeds: Car A/C does require gas, so you should try to use it sparingly when you’re traveling around town. On the highways, the reverse is actually often more efficient because opening the windows creates more drag.
