A commercial vehicle can be a major asset for your business, but just what is considered a “commercial vehicle”? While some Schaumburg drivers associate the term passenger vans or even semi-trucks, the definition of a commercial vehicle involves specific limitations on the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) and seating capacity. Find out what is a commercial vehicle and why this categorization is so important with Biggers Chevrolet, and pick up more car buying tips with us in Elgin!

What Is Considered a Commercial Vehicle?

What is considered a commercial vehicle and why does it matter? Commercial vehicles require different licensing for drivers than a standard passenger vehicle. So while you only need a standard license to drive your Chevy Malibu around Bartlett, driving a Chevy Express Van in Streamwood requires a commercial vehicle driver’s license (CDL) and specialized training.

So, what is a commercial vehicle officially? The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration

(FMCSA) states that commercial-use vehicles will fall into at least one of these categories:

  • Having a GVWR of 10,001 pounds or more.
  • Designed to transport more than 15 passengers including the driver for no compensation.
  • Designed to transport more than 8 passengers for compensation.
  • Designed to transport hazardous materials in quantities requiring the vehicle to be placarded.
