There isn’t anything quite like getting behind the wheel of a pure, American muscle car. The raw, unbridled power and sleek performance in the latest crop of muscle cars is a force to behold. There are a lot of exciting models on the market today, but two of the top, most well-known models are the 2017 Chevy Camaro and the 2017 Ford Mustang. You’ve surely seen both options in your search, but it can be confusing to really compare them on the factors that matter most. We’ve taken the guesswork out for you and put these two models head to head on safety, power, design, performance, and much more. See which one pulls ahead for your priorities.

Safety

Safety is an important, if not the most important, factor for many drivers when choosing a new vehicle. Both the Camaro and the Mustang offer modern safety amenities, like full airbag systems, rearview cameras, electronic stability control, and four-wheel antilock brakes.

The OnStar Basic Plan offered standard for five years and the OnStar Guidance Plan offered standard for six months includes:

  • OnStar Automatic Crash Response
  • OnStar Crisis Assist
  • OnStar Emergency Services
  • OnStar Roadside Assistance
  • OnStar Stolen Vehicle Assistance
  • OnStar Vehicle Diagnostics
  • And more

The Camaro also edges out the Mustang with paid scheduled maintenance for 2 years or 24,000 miles—a feature that the Mustang doesn’t include.

Power and Efficiency

A muscle car is all about power. Any way you slice it, the Camaro’s engines are more powerful than the Mustang’s available engine options. The Camaro’s standard 2.0L turbo 4-cylinder engine has 15 lb-ft more torque than the Mustang’s standard 3.7L V6 engine. The Camaro’s available 3.6L V6 engine has 25 more hp than the Mustang’s EcoBoost 2.3L turbo 4-cylinder engine. Finally, the Camaro’s upgraded 6.2L V8 engine has 20 more hp and 55 lb-ft more torque than the Mustang GT’s 5.0L V8 engine.

You’ll also achieve better efficiency in the Camaro 1SS and 2SS than the Mustang GT and Shelby GT models. The Camaro 1SS and 2SS achieve 16 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway, while the GT tops out at 15 mpg in the city and between 24-25 mpg on the highway, and the Shelby GT models deliver only 14 city mpg and 21 highway mpg.

Suspension and Handling

If your muscle car doesn’t deliver serious performance, then what’s the point? Your suspension can dictate the handling, comfort, and agility of your vehicle. The Camaro offers a wheelbase that is 3.6 inches longer than the Mustang’s, which allows it to have a smoother ride and increased stability.

Design and Comfort

If you’ll be using your vehicle day-to-day, then comfort and ergonomics will go a long way to ensure you love your car. The Camaro offers plenty of design features inside the cabin you’ll love that the Mustang simply doesn’t offer. These features include an optional heads-up display, available heated front seats, and an optional heated steering wheel for a great experience in even the most frigid driving temperatures. You’re sure to get plenty of use out of these features on a daily basis.
